1825.IntheSupremeCouncilcollectionisaScottish
RiteConsistoryapronthatisthoughttohavebeen
ownedbyYates.Hereceivedthe32°asamemberof
theSouthernJurisdictionin1824whichfitsthe
approximatetimewhenthisapronwasmade.While
GourgasmaintainedrecordsfortheSupremeCouncil
duringthe1830s,hopingtorideouttheanti-
Masonicera,YateskepttheGrandCouncilofPrinces
ofJerusaleminAlbanyafloatandwasinstrumentalin
urgingGourgastoresumeactivityintheNorthern
MasonicJurisdictionin1843.WhenGourgas
steppeddownasSovereignGrandCommanderin
1851,itwasanaturalprogressionforhimtohandthe
reinsovertoYates.WhileYatesinitiallyacceptedthe
post,heresignedafterjustafewdaysandnamed
EdwardAsaRaymondashissuccessor.

—bothsmallandlarge—thathavetakenplaceover
thepast200years.Onerecentfindisa33°jewel
originallyawardedtoBenjaminDean(1824-1897)in

jewelgivethedateofMay17,1867?Likemanyof
theobjectsdiscussedhere,Dean’sjewelnotonly
offersevidenceofhislife,butalsohelpstotellthe
storyoftheScottishRite.Theyear1867marksthe
unionoftheVanRensselaerSupremeCounciland
theHays-Raymond-RobinsonSupremeCouncil,
whichwereseparateSupremeCouncilsoperatingin
overlappingterritoryafterSGCRaymondwas
deposedin1860.AfterRaymond’sdeathin1866,
bothgroupsbegantodiscussamergerwithan
agreementworkedoutin1867.Thisunionformed
theNorthernMasonicJurisdictionasweknowit
today.Asaresult,all33°membersfrombothprevious
CouncilsweremadeActiveMembersofthenewly-
unitedSupremeCouncilandpresentedwithnew
jewelsbearingthe1867date.
