years,Michael’swidow,Ruth,generously
presentedmorethan140clockstothecollection.
Michael’sconnectiontotheDudleywatchis
particularlysignificant.TheMasonicemblems
weremachinedbyMichaelwhileDudleywas
workingonhisdesign.

Whilenewmemorieswillbemadein

PhiladelphiainAugust2010astheNorthern
MasonicJurisdictionholdsitsannualmeeting,
themuseumretainsmemoriesofanother
Pennsylvaniaannualmeetingintheformofa
souvenirinitscollection.Theyellowandwhite
milkglassvaseisalmost100yearsoldandseems
tohavebeenpresentedasagift,probablyata
Consistory-relatedeventatthe1916meetingin
Pittsburgh.

Formedwiththreesides,eachfaceofthevase

hasaportraitofaman.OnesideshowsBarton
Smith,33°,theSovereignGrandCommanderat
thetime.Smith(1852-1935),whowasan
attorneyinToledo,OH,heldtheofficeof
SovereignGrandCommanderfrom1910-21.A
secondsideshowsJamesIsaacBuchanan,33°,
DeputyforPennsylvaniain1916,andthethird
sidedepictsGeorgeWilberforceMcCandless,
32°,whoisidentifiedinhiscapacityas
“Commander-In-Chief”onthevase.

Buchanan(1853-1931)wasborninCanada,

butcametoPennsylvaniain1877whenhewas
employedbytheOilCityTrustCompany.
Accordingtohisobituary,hewouldgoonto

serve“asanofficerofalargenumberof
manufacturingandfinancialprojects,andatone
timewasrepresentedonthedirectoratesofover
30corporations.”Bro.BuchananbecameaMason
inCanadain1875andcontinuedhis
membershipintheUnitedStates.Hereceived
the33°in1890andwasDeputyforPennsylvania
from1897-1919.McCandless(1869-1950)wasa
nativeofPittsburghwhowassecretaryand
treasureroftheMcConwayandTorley
Corporationwhichmadecastings,forgingsand
automaticcouplers.InitiatedasaFreemasonin
1891,McCandlessreceivedthe33°atthe1916
Pittsburghmeeting,whilehewasservingas
Commander-in-ChiefofthePennsylvania
Consistory.

he1916meetingwas“precededbyseveral
interestingandimportantevents”according

totheProceedings.Perhapsmostnotably,the
ScottishRiteapartments,inthenewPittsburgh
MasonicTemple,werededicatedonSept.16(the
annualmeetingstartedonSept.20).Twodays
later,JamesIsaacBuchanan,33°,andmembersof
PittsburghConsistoryexemplifiedthenewritual
forthe32°.AccordingtotheProceedingsthe
performance“madeadeepandlastingimpression
bythebeautyoftheforminwhichwereclothed
thesacredprinciplesofthebelovedScottish
Rite.”Undoubtedly,thesamewillbetrueofthe
ceremoniesandritualsmarkingthe2010Annual
Meeting.
